One bit per pixel. Often in reference to a bitonal image.

ABA
American Bankers Association
ABA number
Often referred to as the back routing number and is often the first item in the micr line.
ABA symbol
The leading and trailing symbol in the transit field which is made up of a vertical dash with two dots to the right of it.
account number
The numeric designation on the micr line for the institution account that the item is being drawn from.
accuracy percent
A measurement of percentage read by a recognition engine such as car/lar. (See also confidence level.)
ACH
Automated Check Clearing House - NACHA governed financial network that is reponsible of processes electronic payments.
ARC
Accounts Recievable Check Conversion - An electronic method which converts physical items for electronic payment by utilizing a third party remittance processor or lock box handler. These items are imaged and converted to ACH debits.
amount field
The numeric designation in a micr line.
audit trail
Tracking within the item processing process to verify clearing and lawful transaction. (Note: in banking proper this term can refer to any tracking of transactions such as teller work.)
auto feed
The automatic movement of items into the transport track.
auto feeder
The mechanism in most imagers and reader/sorters to feed documents into the transport track.
auxillary on-us field
Usually the micr field that holds the check sequence.

Back-End Check Imaging System
A process whereby the checks are turned into digital images and stored in an image database.
bank capture
Usually refers to method of check processing whereby check micr data is read or the check is imaged for balancing.
bank imaging
Refers to the process of capturing a digital image of checks.
bank item
Generally any negotiable instrument such as a check.
bank processing
Refers to general item processing within a banking institution.
bank repair
In item processing refers to the process of amount re-entry and balancing.
bank research
In item processing refers to the method of data retrieval of digital check items.

The process of trading and investing of negotiable instruments.
Banking Terms
A list of terms applied to the particulars of banking.
batch
"Depending on the institution this definition may have slightly different meanings. Generally it is a form of capture separation. Some institutions capture in ""runs"" and the term ""batch"" is used synonymously. In some systems the ""run"" represents a particular body of work such as an entire days worth of captures and the batch is the individual captures for that day."
binary image
Usually a referring to a bitonal image of just black and white (on/off).

Branch Capture
The process of capturing branch work to database. This method facilitates electronic transfer in minutes over former currier transfer.

A system that facilitates the capture of check items at the branch.

To read or image physical items into an electronic form.
capture reject
An item or items that are generally sent to a reject pocket due to misread micr information.
CAR
Courtesy Amount Recognition. Refers to the specific reading of the amount field on a digital cehck image.
carrier
A pocket type sleeve which can be used to image a damaged or torn physical item
CAR/LAR
Known as courtesy amount recognition/legal amount recognition A method of electronically reading a physical check or image of a check. This method reads the amounts based off of their location on the item. It generally utilizes a form of grid matrix which checks for the presence of markings in a given areas.
cash letters
A generic term used to refer to items in outgoing transit. It should be noted that one institutions cash letter can be another institution s inclearings.
check

Short for Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act which allows for the voluntary usage of digital images as negotiable instruments.

The method of reading or imaging physical items into digital format.

Courtesy Amount Recognition
Reading of the courtesy amount which is usually written or printed by the check payee in a box on the right hard side of a check.

Refers to the process of capturing a digital image of checks.
dog eared
A reference to a fold in the corner edge of an item.
double feed
"Sometimes called a ""piggy back"" this refers to a form of misfeed whereby two items are fed at once. This form of feed error generally produces a double image of two items (one on top of the other) or the second item is hidden behind the first."
DPI
Dots Per Inch - A measurement of image resolution often used in check imaging. Check images are often 100 to 250 dpi resolution.
DPM
Documents Per Minute - A measurement of the document rate of capture or throughput possible in check imaging.
drop-out ink
An ink print that is outside of the light spectrum that a normal scanner can read. Ususally this refers to hues of blue or red and or pastels. These items will appear transparent or barely visible to a image camera and may even throw a image read error.
duplex imaging
Scanning both sides of a physical item into digital image format.
duplex printing
Printing both sides of a digital image.

In some institutions this is an item that is from out of country. However in item processing in general it refers to items not on the current bank at which the item resides. For clarification many institutions have began using the term transit items.

image capture
Refers to the process of capturing a digital image of checks.

A form of processing in which captures are balanced before transit items are separated.

A check written on the bank where the item currently resides.

Image Replacement Document - A reproduction of a physical check or the image of a digital check.

Legal Amount Recognition. Ususally referring to the specific reading of the Legal Amount on a digital check image.
leading edge
The foremost part of an item being imaged. Usually this refers to the signature/amount side of a check image.

An old standard whereby items are filmed for later research. This system is completely visual based but has very limited means of tracking documents.

A form of check imaging difficulty in which the physical item has been exposed to water (or other fluid content) and has caused the item to a. bleed or run. b. the paper to detereorate or become fragile. c. the adjacent items to stick together.
wave shape
The character wave of a micr character when read.
write head
The magnetizing head or a micr read system. Or the head of the cartridge or stamp mechanism that writes a check endorsement.
